Scargo Tower is a 30-foot stone tower in South Dennis, on Cape Cod. From the top, you can see sites as far as Plymouth and Provincetown.
On one fine, early summer day, Benny, the Mrs., and I were driving home from a business meeting. Yes, that’s right. A business meeting. The attendees were Benny, myself, and my wife, and it took place at an ice cream shop.
Anywho, we had heard of Scargo Tower before, and decided to make a short detour off of Route 6 to go and explore.
The parking lot near Scargo Tower is small. Thankfully, there was nobody else there. This was truly a gift; usually the Cape is so full of yellow license plates everywhere that I feel like I’m driving in downtown Manhattan.
The datestone shows that the tower is wicked old. You can find the entrance by walking to the other side of the tower. Don’t worry, it’s not as spooky as the picture makes it look.
Be careful climbing up the spiral staircase. Benny ran up and fell down a few times. Thankfully, the only thing that was broken was his ego.
I told Benny to be especially careful for this photo. It was windy up there. Once the photo was snapped, he jumped off the railing and back onto the platform.
Although it’s hard to make it out in the photos, we could see as far as Provincetown and Plymouth. Next time, I’m bringing a pair of binoculars.
The top of the tower is mostly graffiti-free, with a couple of exceptions. One was a positive note, and the other is a typical, New England-style message.
Visiting Scargo Tower makes for a perfect quick trip if you’re in the area. For more information, check out the Dennis Historical Society.
