Poet’s Seat Tower not only rewards you with spectacular views of Greenfield, but also makes for a great quick side trip while visiting Western Mass. Also, there’s no charge or fee to visit.
We were on our way continuing our tour de Western Mass, and we were looking for a good place where we could savor the views that the area has to offer. I thought about climbing a mountain, but Benny still wasn’t feeling well after being stung by a bee at the Bridge of Flowers. Wanting him to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, I suggested that we go for a quick visit to Poet’s Seat Tower.
I accidentally drove by the entrance a couple of times, but I finally found it off of Mountain Road. Driving up was a bit spooky. I thought we had made a wrong turn, and Benny wasn’t helping at all by saying “Oooooooohhhhhhh…..spooky!” consistently. But, after a short ways, we found the tower.
To our dismay, all of the parking spots were taken! I was ready to give up and turn around, but Benny was absolutely determined to go up this tower.
“Bob, just park on the side of the road!”
There was ample room to park, so I cautiously drove the car to the edge of the street. For some reason, I’m always concerned that I’m going to get a ticket for not parking in the right place.
“Stop being a worry-wart!” Benny exasperated.
I cut him some slack for his attitude; he was still sore from the bee sting.
There were a few people at the tower, but not so many that we didn’t have room to explore the grounds. Benny saw something fly by him, and he instantly flinched, jumped into my backpack, and screamed, “No more UFO’s!”
This caused a few people to stare. “What are you talking about, you crazy bear?” I asked.
“They’re unidentified flying objects. UFO’s. And I don’t want them to sting me!”
“Oh, you mean you’re terrified of these little, harmless ladybugs?”
Realizing the true nature of the cause of his fear, he jumped out of the bag, and in true Benny fashion, asked if he could take a picture with them.
Apparently, Poet’s Seat Tower is home to hundreds of ladybugs.
We decided it was time to enter the tower. It’s a few stories high, and we knew that the views would be amazing on top.
For the climb up, I didn’t let Benny hitch a ride in my backpack. Oh no. I made him go up every step. Am I mean? Maybe. But I figured a little exercise would do him good. He was doing well until we got to the final set of stairs.
“I’m going to fall through the stairs if I climb up!”
He did have a point. Can you imagine Benny rolling and falling down these stairs? So I let him jump in the bag for the last step. (See what I did there? The last set of stairs? The last step? My goodness, I’m hilarious.)
At the top of Poet’s Seat Tower, we were rewarded with views of the town of Greenfield on one side and foliage on the others.
If you’re wondering what the top of the tower looks like, don’t fret, it’s completely secure. No way you can fall off, unless you do something unwise like sit on the railing…
Which is exactly what Benny did, of course.
“Bob, this is a great place for a picture. Stop worrying, I’m leaning up against this rock thing here.”
I snapped a photo quickly, and then grabbed him from off of the ledge.
“That was a bit perilous, Benny.”
“Yes, it was a bit pretty, wasn’t it?”
This bear.
And thus concluded our quick trip to Poet’s Seat Tower in Greenfield.
