Fall River restaurants offer unique plates that are hard to find elsewhere. Whether you live in the Spindle City or are just passing through, you should definitely visit at least one of these dining establishments.
This list is in no particular order, and is by no means inclusive of all possible places to eat in Fall River. This is not a sponsored post, and I’m not receiving any compensation from any of the Fall River restaurants listed below.
1. Al Mac’s Diner
Al Mac’s Diner is a landmark in the city. Operating since 1953, the diner offers not only typical comfort food, but also dishes that are unique to Fall River. Where else can you get a chourico grilled cheese sandwich? The diner is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
2. Caldeiras Restaurant
We can’t talk about Fall River restaurants without mentioning at least one Portuguese establishment. In the neighborhood known as the Flint, Caldeiras serves authentic Portuguese cuisine. Order the Camarao Mocambique for an appetizer and the Bacalhau na Braza and imagine that you’re in Europe.
3. The Cove Restaurant and Marina
The Cove is the perfect date night location. Situated on the Taunton River, you’ll enjoy views of the water, and be able to choose from a variety of seafood. If you have a boat, you can dock right beside the restaurant.

4. Mee Sum Chinese Restaurant
Mee Sum is in the heart of Fall River’s South End. One dish served is the Chow Mein Sandwich. This special take on chow mein can’t be found far outside of the Fall River area. If you go to Boston and order chow mein, you’ll get softer noodles and not the harder, crunchy noodles that Fall Riverites are used to. For a truly unique dining experience, head over to Mee Sum.
5. J&J’s Coney Island Hot Dogs
Also in the South End, J&J’s is another Fall River landmark. Will you order your hot dogs with the works, which includes the Coney Island meat sauce, mustard, and onions? Or perhaps you’ll get something else on the menu, such as a good, old-fashioned cheeseburger or some Portuguese soup? No matter what you eat at this fast food-style restaurant, you can’t go wrong.
6. LePage’s Seafood and Grille
Enjoy a great seafood dish at a local restaurant that’s been around for over 30 years. In the warmer weather, eat outside where you can admire the view of South Watuppa Pond, or, if you visit in the winter, warm up inside with steamed clams and a bowl of chowder.
7. Caravela Restaurant
If you have a craving for some steak and fries, a popular dish in the city, or a chourico sandwich, check out Caravela Restaurant. If you’re feeling really bold, practice your bilingual skills and ask for the Portuguese menu.
8. Patti’s Pierogi’s
Patti’s Pierogis celebrates Polish cuisine and has a variety of pierogis on the menu. Try the potato and cheese, Buffalo Bills, or the cheeseburger Brady Bunch pierogi. It’s so well-known that Guy Fieri stopped by for a bite. If you’re not in the mood for pierogis, try the kielbasa or kapusta soup.
9. Faneek’s Coney Island
Faneek’s is another Fall River fast food classic restaurant. Just viewing their website will make you hungry. Coney Island hot dogs? Clam cakes? American chop suey? Chourico? There’s no local comfort food that you can’t find here. Even though Faneek’s is surrounded by chain restaurants, with these mouth-watering food choices, this Fall River restaurant isn’t about to go anywhere.
10. McGovern’s Family Restaurant
Since 1968, family-owned McGovern’s has been serving high-quality food from their extensive menu. If you have picky eaters in your party, McGovern’s is the place to go. Chicken Pot Pie, Shepherd’s Pie, and French Meat Pie are delicious entrées listed on their daily specials (Tuesday through Thursday). The food, service, and down-to-earth atmosphere was what probably made McGovern’s my grandmother’s favorite restaurant.
